Reclaiming Your Career Path
What if your federal job series wasn’t just a classification — but a blueprint for your next step?
Trish and I have spent the past year decoding the federal workforce, translating 400+ General Service (GS) series across 23 Occupational Groups into viable alternatives. GS-0343 Management Analysts, GS-2210 IT Specialists, GS-0201 Human Resource Specialists, GS-1102 Contracting Specialists, GS-0346 Logistics Specialists, GS-0801 Engineers, and more: we’ve mapped out how these roles can evolve into independent consulting, mission-driven support roles, digital services, and community-based revenue sources.
It’s time to share them.
Why This Matters
Too many people feel stuck; financially, professionally, and emotionally. But the truth is you already have the skills, the experience, and the insight to create something impactful.
You just need the right framework:
Stabilize your finances by recognizing that the solution lies in the equation we provided earlier: {Assets (what you own) minus Liabilities (what you owe)} plus {Income (what you earn) minus Expenses (what you spend)} = Financial Stability.
Open your mind to the possibilities of how you can improve your financial position.
Obviously, the goal is to own more than you owe and earn more than you spend. You have choices that you may not have considered to achieve this.
Next week’s Substack will cover this topic in greater depth. Participate in Career Matters or Open Office Hours to discuss these topics live.
Reclaim your time by designing work around your life — not the other way around. Your needs and priorities are likely shifting. Let yourself shift with them. Maybe you’re caring for family, managing your health, or dealing with the stress of debt and expenses that exceed your current income. These aren’t distractions, they’re signals. Pay attention to them.
Time is your greatest resource. So how can you take action to align your assets, liabilities, income, and expenses with the life you need now, not the one you used to have, or the one you thought you were supposed to build?
Let’s discuss. Join us at Career Matters or Open Office Hours.
Strengthen your home life. A stable home begins with harmony. Reducing stress and nurturing connection are essential because fear and anxiety don’t just disrupt peace, they erode trust. Address them openly. Be real. Lead with compassion and empathy. Remember: everyone in your household is on the same team. We may just show it in different ways. Therefore, listen to each other. Ask questions before assigning judgment.
Just like in business, every person in a household has a role. Every person craves autonomy, purpose, and choice. Every person wants to be seen, heard, and recognized. We all have different strengths and respond to anxiety in our own way. That’s why patience and empathy aren’t just helpful — they’re vital.
Practice patience and empathy to build a culture of teamwork:
Invite input
Share responsibilities
Create accountability without punishment
There will be natural consequences, and those are the most powerful teachers. Let them guide growth, not shame. Be kind. Be intentional. Be the leader your home and personal life needs. After all, we work to live, not the other way around.
From Series to Solutions
Each federal series has a core function, and that can be translated into other opportunities:
Service Offerings
What you can provide as a solo operator, small firm, or partner with others.
Examples: financial knowledge, strategic communications, compliance audits, training workshops, supply chains, process improvement, standard operating procedures, etc.
Explaining Your Value to Non-Feds
How you should explain your government work to non-government people.
How to cross-walk government terms, titles, and jargon for a non-government audience.
Client Profiles
Where your skills are needed outside the federal government.
Examples: small businesses, nonprofits, local governments, startups, schools, community organizations
Income Models
How to structure your venture: freelance, specialty firm, micro agency, subscription-based service, digital product, or hybrid
Lean models that require minimal upfront investment and maximize flexibility
Pricing Strategies
How to price your services based on value, not just time
Tiered packages, retainers, project-based fees, and performance incentives
What’s Next: The Series Rollout
Over the coming weeks, we’ll release multiple posts that break down selected federal series into:
Income concepts: Convert your government service background into income streams that represent your value outside the Federal government.
Sample work models: Design win‑win work models that multiply your impact.
Tools for change: Discover practical tools, systems, and strategies that strengthen your progress and sustain long‑term success.
Each post will be a mini-blueprint — not just inspiration, but implementation.
Why This Matters
This isn’t about quitting your job tomorrow. It’s about seeing your financial stability differently, reclaiming your autonomy, and building a life that aligns with your values and what you need today and your tomorrows. It’s about stabilizing your finances, strengthening your home life, and stepping into your role as a creator, not just a contributor.
Everyone should think like an entrepreneur at home and at work. This is true in good times and in bad.
We’re here to help you use the right lens.
